The New England College of Optometry (NECO) chapter of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH) traveled successfully to the Dominican Republic to provide eye care to an underserved community during the second week of April. The trip lasted 8 days from April 4th-11th, 2014 and consisted of 21 optometry students and 5 doctors of optometry. The group of 26 volunteers teamed up with the Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) and managed to see over 900 patients in 5 days on clinic.
Batey Gonzalo is a small town in the Monte Plata Province and was the destination for the SVOSH-NECO group. The trip served roughly one-quarter of the towns’ population in just 5 days of service. Patients were provided with prescription glasses, sunglasses, ocular medications and toys. The efforts resulted in a very successful mission that provided eye care to those who do not have the proper resources in their community, as well as an enriching experience for all students and doctors on the trip.
